Woman's modern day beauty standards
Today, I focused on photography and took photos of the female form. Exposing the truth of the female body, we have flaws, marks, freckles. We aren't completely flat stomached and petite, like society expects of us. My photos show body rolls and goosebumps and scars.
Todays body standards for females are very narrow and don't give much room to allow multiple body types. In this day and age different body shapes/sizes are beginning to be accepted, for example plus sized movement.
Hannah Wilkes
Wilke challenges the conventions of femininity by posing, her shirt open with naked breasts. As people entered her exhibition she handed them a stick of gum which they would then stick to her body after chewing. She calls chewing gum the "perfect metaphor for the American woman"; chew her up, use her, get rid of her and get another piece, or new woman.
Her work describes the reality of many women and how they are used for their bodies, or how they are seen as only their bodies. Objectified by males, the media and society. While the male body isn't seen as sexual the nude female body is seen as erotic. Even the clothed female body is perceived as sexual. I want to highlight the ideas that are exposed in Wilkes work in my own work.
